The Fly, has Hit, the Braai

Houseflies are probably one of the most annoying challenges most of us are facing. The quickest way to find flies hiding away from you is to light the braai fire or start cooking, yes, this is a sure way to grab not only the attention of the flies in your yard and home but the neighbours and their neighbours, in fact, flies can smell food from a couple of kilometers away.

Now of coarse it will not always be that the downtown fly will make it to your property, because there are many factors that play a part. The point is that, if one wants to control flies, you must follow a couple of key efforts in order to successfully achieve this. Now keep in mind that flies are also attracted to garbage, feces, and even pet food.

House keeping is one of the first things a homeowner must consider before any further efforts are entertained. Now house keeping doesn't always equal to someone living dirty, sometimes it does but not always, however house keeping includes removing garbage away from the house daily in summer months, but almost all year round for the coast of Durban, garbage must be self driven away once or twice weekly over and above normal city waste weekly removals.

House keeping includes making sure that animal dung be removed daily, pet food bowls emptied, water sources must be cut off and food preparation areas must be kept clean and go through exclusion method tactics, like screened doors and windows, blue lights, etc. A successful fly program must start a distance away from a dwelling point, considerations must be made for flats and complexes and methods must be adapted.

Flies will land on food and other materials that attract them simply because they taste with their six disgusting little disease carrying feet. They will examine a potential meal flying from one to another, until they have found it, so animal dung, garbage and finally your food, to make matters worse, flies eat food by way of vomiting it out. Flies spread disease and bacteria and can not only leave you very ill, but it could become fatal.

Now some DIY solutions include introducing smells in your area that flies hate like peppermint, basil, pine, rosemary, rue, lavender, eucalyptus, and bay leaves. Lastly, flies are one of the few pests that actually gets affected by colour, yes colour, they are greatly attracted to the colour blue, that is why, fly trap light units are blue/purple lights and they absolutely hate the colour yellow. Now although it might not be practical to paint all our homes yellow, it leaves room for thought on the colour of our next table cloths and kitchen colours.
